What is the 70/20/10 Rule?
You may have seen a recent email about the 70/20/10 rule and wondered... what is that?
The 70/20/10 rule is a way to allocate your most valuable resources (your time and effort!) towards innovation. Google introduced this rule to help its employees understand how it allocated resources to innovative projects.
70% of resources allocated to CORE innovations
20% of resources allocated to ADJACENT innovations
10% of resources allocated to DISRUPTIVE innovations
"The 70-20-10 rule says that 70 percent of people's time and organizational resources should be spent on activities tied to advancing the core business in small ways through continuous improvement; 20 percent should be focused on adjacencies that advance the core business in significant ways through bigger investments; and 10 percent should be allocated to exploring blue-sky disruptive opportunities" Use The 70-20-10 Rule To Innovate
It's interesting to look at the long-term returns of organizing efforts with the 70/20/10 rule.
Investing in the core activities has relatively small long-term returns compared to the 10% investment in disruptive activities. The 10% is what ends up opening new businesses and revolutionary ideas.
